The Electronic Portfolio Boom: What’s it All About?

Here’s a 2002 article from Campus Technology that provides a good background on how electronic portfolios are being used in colleges and universities. The article mentions a Phil Long (MIT) comment about higher ed being in the “tribal discussion” phase of implementation where faculty are trying to figure out how to best use electronic portfolios. Have we made made significant progress towards stable implementation in the five years since this article was written? I think we are still struggling with issues like: What is the true purpose for having the portfolio? We seem to be asking over and over again the question: What is the best way to implement a portfolio system that assesses student competency on state standards while allowing them to showcase their best work to prospective employers?
